1896 HERTSLET MAP OF AFRICA BY TREATY IN 3 VOLUMES BRITISH EMPIRE MANUAL WW1. THE MAP OF AFRICA. (SECOND AND REVISED EDITION). Sir EDWARD HERTSLET K. Volume I: Abyssinia to Great Britain. Volume II: Great Britain & France to Zanzibar. Volume III: Appendix, Index, & Chronological List. Printed by Harrison and Sons, London, 1896. A rare complete three volume set of the 1896 edition of The Map of Africa by Treaty. This is Sir Edward Hertslets monumental work on the treaties that defined the colonisation of Africa. The object of the book was, as Hertslet stated: To show how, by treaty, Conquest, or Cession, or under the name of a protectorate, European Powers have succeeded, at different times, in obtaining a footing in various parts of the African continent, and how these occupations have been greatly extended during the last few years. In other words, to enable all those who are interested in the development of Africa to examine for themselves the title deeds by which each Foreign Power maintains its rights to the possessions which it holds, or to territory which it occupies, or claims influence over, in that part of the world. The three volumes contain the complete text of all the various treaties, notes and agreements, and are well illustrated with excellent coloured maps. Lewis Hertslet retired from his post as Foreign Office Librarian in 1857 his son Edward Hertslet was promoted from Sub Librarian to Librarian. Edward had followed his father into the Foreign Office, attained a permanent appointment in 1842, and in 1844 became a Second Clerk. He continued to edit the publications his father had started. Edward was sole editor and proprietor of The Foreign Office List from 1865. This work included the names of British Diplomats overseas, statements of their service and deaths, the foreign diplomats in British territories, and examples of the examination papers undertaken by diplomats. This remains a particularly useful source for researchers. Other works were: The Map of Europe by Treaty and The Map of Africa by Treaty ; and Recollections of the Old Foreign Office (1901). In June 1878 he was appointed acting secretary of the Embassy in Berlin. With his expert knowledge of treaties, Hertslet was attached to the British Delegation to the Berlin Congress. He was awarded a Knighthood on 6th August 1878 in recognition of his work throughout the Congress. The boards of the three volumes are in good condition, with general signs of wear and use, fading near the edges, and fading to the spine. There are index marks to the spines and wear to the top edges. The binding and hinges are secure. The text is in good condition. There is some age toning to the endpapers. The maps are in very good condition. There are Withdrawn stamps, and Bedford College For Women library markings to the endpapers, and small ink stamps to the title pages.
