1782 Kitchin Early Map of Africa – ORIGINAL MAP. Africa, agreeable to the most approved Maps and Charts, By Mr. This elegant circa 1782 map by Thomas Kitchin depicts the continent of Africa with Madagascar and includes parts of Arabia and the Mediterranean Sea. Throughout, Kitchin maps the various indigenous tribes and early African Kingdoms. Most maps of Africa at the time were full of speculation. This particular map is no exception. Central Africa is largely unmapped. The White Nile flows south into the Ptolemaic Lunar Mountains or the Mountains of the Moon. A network of rivers also extends westward from the White Nile, most likely based on the belief that the Nile may be connected to the Niger River. Lake Malawi appears in its long embryonic form with its northern banks incomplete. The Lake was officially discovered in 1849. The map appears in George Henry Millar’s “New Complete and Universal System of Geography”. His maps and atlases of England earned him the position of hydrographer to the King. This is a beautiful example of his work. In good condition with some wear and minor rips along the original folds and toning along the edges. The edges are chipped at several places, not affecting the printed image. Publication: George Henry Millar, (London) 1782. Image measures 13″ x 14.75″.
