Carte de la Rivière de Kalbar. 36.5 cm x 21 cm copperplate engraving, 39.5 cm x 25 sheet size, Paris, 1747. We are pleased to offer this scarce example of a chart compiled by the esteemed geographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. And environs on the Guinea Coast of West Africa near what is now the border between Nigeria and Cameroon from a chart “Drawn very exactly on the spot in the year 1699 by several pilots jointly” as the cartouche informs. This is a reference to the 1699 voyage of Jacques Barbot & John Grazilhier – at that time the delta port of New Calabar was the only port in the Bight of Biafra to which European slave trading vessels paid regular visits throughout the 17th century, a period where as historian Charles Rappleye has observed: In the West Indies in particular, but also in North and South America, slavery was the engine that drove the mercantile empires of Europe. The institution was as old as time – finding explicit sanction in the Bible, and in the glory days of Greece and Rome – and had flourished, in its modern form, for two hundred years. It appeared, in the eighteenth century, as universal and immutable as human nature… Whose work to eradicate human trafficking in the present day with a special focus on the desperate conditions in parts of Africa faces enormous challenges. The conditions at New Calabar for slaves bound for the New World were unspeakable, and as one scholar as noted the trade trived with Africans from this port because they had better immunity to tropical diseases than either Amerindians or Europeans, they were readily available and relatively inexpensive, and their cultural distinctiveness helped Europeans to contrive racial justifications for their enslavement. Condition – Please note carefully: Chart is in very good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct platemark, image area essentially pristine, high quality laid paper, two vertical folds as issued, close trim to left margin just outside neatline, no text on verso, minor soft creasing lower right corner.
