Filippo Pigafetta / De Bry. Combined size 54 x 37cm (2 separate maps as issued). Condition: trimmed to both sides with loss of margins and image. Some toning to paper. Fold in centre as issued. The De Bry version of the Pigafetta map of Africa. This map comes from volume one of De Brys petit voyages Vera Descriptio Regini Africani , Printed in Frankfurt in 1598. It is based on the pigafetta version which was published in 1591. The map is in two parts: north and South Africa. It is delicately and elaborately engraved with cartouches and sea monsters. These embellishments were key features of maps of the 1500s and are expertly shown here. The Pigafetta work, on which this map was based, described the journey of Duarte lopes though the Congo in 1578 to 1584. Lopes met Pigafetta in Rome in the late 1580s and subsequently published the work and map. De Bry produced a further edition as part one of his famous Petits voyages with a reissue of this map. The map is important as it rejects the long-held Ptolemaic belief of the Mountains of the Moon as the source for the Nile River. Instead, the map depicts two lakes which feed the main rivers of Africa. The lower lake feeds the Rio de Manhic (Zambezi) and the Lorenzo Marches (Limpopo), and the northern one feeds the Nile, with a river connecting the two lakes. The map became an important source on central Africa and the Congo, and was frequently used by later writers and mapmakers. An excellent opportunity to obtain an important map. Trimming to both sides of the map with loss of image. The item “Africa Map De Bry Pigafetta 1598″ is in sale since Wednesday, February 6, 2019.
